French Fridays with Dorie brings us another fun & easy recipe this week. I cheated a bit and only used ingredients that I had on hand, but I really enjoyed my version of Dorie's Nutella Tartine.
This was such a simple recipe that even a young child could make on their own. I used some of my leftover homemade white bread from my Tuesdays with Dorie group and toasted it up with a little butter. (I actually don't even know where to find challah or brioche bread in my town ... if I were still in Pittsburgh I'd just run to the little local grocery store and have all kinds of choices of yummy bread!) Dorie recommends orange marmalade on top of the toast, but I'm not a huge fan of orange marmalade, so I used some homemade strawberry jam that was in my fridge. Then I melted some Nutella and drizzled it on top. I also haven't had any luck finding hazelnuts in my town. In the past I've looked at grocery stores, Wal-Mart, & Trader Joe's, but I've had no luck. Maybe I need to make a trip to Whole Foods or Sprouts. Anywho, since I wanted to use ingredients that I already had at home, I found some sliced almonds in my freezer and I toasted them up & sprinkled them on top of my tartine. I have to admit that the toasty almonds were my favorite part of this dish.
Dorie says the Nutella tartine is comparable to American's milk & cookies after-school snack, so my kiddies & I enjoyed our tartines for our after-school snack one afternoon. I highly recommend this little treat!!
P.S. Dorie also recommends sprinkling a little fleur de sel on top, but I opted to not do that. So far I haven't been a huge fan of desserts with fleur de sel. I know it's popular and I spent a pretty penny to get my own bottle of this fancy salt, but it just doesn't seem to be my thing. I've found it to be too strong when I have used it. Any thoughts?

It might be the French equivalent of cookies and milk but we thought it a very grown up treat. Wasn't it fun to use our bread from Tuesdays with Dorie?

Yup...Honey could actually really help me on this one and the hazel huts were her favorite part. She picked them off and ate them and kept adding more to the top. Found them at Sprouts.
ReplyDeleteI live in a medium sized city, and hazelnuts are very, very difficult to find. And when I do, I'm always eyeing the bag, wondering how long they've sat there.

ReplyDeleteGreat that this recipe is such a kid-pleaser! It's nice to have a sure-fire hit to offer them every now and then. Strawberry sounds better than orange marmalade to me. Yum!

ReplyDeleteI like fleur de sel on slices of ripe tomatoes, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, a sprinkle of balsamic vinegar and a pinch of fleur de sel, yum-that's one of my favorites;-)
What a treat for after school! I'm glad your kids enjoyed them as much as you did. Great idea on using TWD white loaf and your substitution keeps the spirit of the recipe intact. I too think the crunchy toasted nuts is the best part!
ReplyDeleteMaybe try Bristol Farms or Gelson's... for some reason, I think I have seen them at those stores. Ironically hazelnuts are not an item I have a difficult time finding in the dessert. Great looking tartine!

I think I am actually happy (on some level)that Nana did not make this for me as an after school snack when growing up....or I would probably weigh a metric ton :) Great for you to use the TWD bread- Nana made that bread but used it all up on grilled cheese. We are very lucky to get gourmet bread and actually from an outlet, of all places. And I am on "team salt" in a big way...but my favorite candy is chocolate covered pretzels- so you can see I am a fan of the sweet/savory deal. Great post !
ReplyDeleteGreat plan to use what you had on hand. This one wasn't my favorite, though I did like all the parts separately, just not together. That's what makes this fun, seeing what you like and what you don't. Glad that your kids enjoyed their Dorie snack.
ReplyDeletei just get some sicilian sea salt from mccormicks for the times where i dont want to use my fleur de sel :) But the chocolate chip cookies that I make by chopping dark chocolate into the dough I roll in sea salt and they are SO much more delicious that way because the salt makes the chocolate taste more decadent, sweet and rich! :)
