Garlicky Crumb-Coated Broccoli - French Fridays with Dorie

Wow! Can't believe it's already April 7th ... where is the year 2011 going?  Today it will have to be a short, but sweet post for me because I'm hosting a dinner party at my home tonight for a church activity.  Hubby & I were up until 1am last night cleaning the backyard, hanging lights, and setting up tables and chairs.  And then I woke up this morning and rain is in the forecast! ARGH!!!  A dinner party in the yard will be so much better, but I can quickly rearrange furniture, if needed, to bring tables & chairs inside ... but I'm still praying for no rain and a lovely dinner outside tonight.



The garlicky crumb-coated broccoli was another simple yet very tasty recipe from Dorie.  I loved trying a new way to cook broccoli and for me this is a practical recipe that I'd definitely use again.  I think my bread crumbs and garlic got toasted a bit too much, but it was still good ... just something to keep in mind for next time.  And I loved the lemon zest with the broccoli.  I've made green beans and asparagus with lemon juice in the past, but I've never done the zest thing and never done either with broccoli.  Next time I think I'll search out a larger lemon or two lemons for even more zest!!

And you don't want to miss next week ... my kids are already drooling ... vanilla eclairs!!  And there are variations to the recipe that include CHOCOLATE!  You better believe we'll be going the chocolate route here at our house!

P.S.  I'm completely frustrated with the ISO capabilities ... or lack of ... on the camera.  I like to turn-up my ISO when needed without getting a bunch of noise.  Anyone tried or have opinions on the Nikon D7000??  I know it's not as rugged as the D300, but I'm just shooting kids & food & the 7000 has the features that I want.  I tried a D7000 at Costco for a few minutes and was impressed, but I've heard mixed reviews on them.

I'll pray for no rain too, but sorry, Dad is praying for rain! I think that making my own bread crumbs from day-old bread created a more airy amount of crumbs that are not as pronounced as in your photo and they just absorbed the garlic/butter and stuck to the broccoli...I like the way they turned out...did not get as browned (not as noticeable in my photo). And we always like the citrus...more is always good and I might squeeze a little lemon juice over the broccoli next time. Nice job...I thought you'd like this recipe. Have fun tonight!

Have fun tonight! Hopefully no rain for you. Nice that you were able to squeeze this in, with all you have to do. nice too that it was such a simple recipe. I'm with you on the eclairs next week...chocolate all the way!

Hey - I am so excited about the eclairs. It's been a VERY long time since I have made them (I hope that the experience doesn't make me remember why I stopped making them...)

I have the Nikon D90 but have heard good thing sabout the camera you are considering. I am vey excited for elcairs too.

I hope you got the weather you wanted. I'm nervous about the eclairs. I'm sure they will taste good, but it's all new techniques for me, and I'm more of a cooker than a baker. AShould be interesting.

We have a D5000 and I'm too chicken/inexperienced with cameras to try to use the manual settings. I usually end up shooting with the food setting and then doing some of the color balancing on iPhoto before uploading to cancel out some of the bad lighting. It doesn't help that I do a lot of my picture taking at night. I need to find some good tutorials! Your broccoli looks absolutely scrumptious; love the contrast with the pretty blue dish.

Nana and I were both happy to be making something so healthy this week in preparation of the eclair extravaganza next week. I am not sure what is scarier- the thought of trying to make them, or being able to actually make them easily. Our figures would do better having to go out of our way to buy them...

Next weekend will be so fun visiting FFWD blogs and reading about the eclairs :) I am getting my first dSLR in a couple of weeks, but I'm getting the Canon Rebel t2i. I will sign up for photography classes and I'm already learning photoshop on Saturdays. So excited!

I hope your dinner party works out.

We really loved the lemon zest in this, but I must buy a zester or microplane. It takes a lot of patience to shred the zest of an entire lemon with a knife...
