Pumpkin Flans: French Fridays with Dorie

Because time is of the essence this week, I chose to make the pumpkin flans.  This has to be one of the fastest recipes I have ever made!!  I just dumped a handful of ingredients into my blender, whirled everything around a bit, poured the mixture into ramekins, and then walked away while they baked.  I chose to use some more of the Gruyere cheese that I had in my fridge because I knew my family wouldn't come close to the flans if they had "moldy" cheese in them.

I tried a flan while they were still a little warm.  I liked the flavor better than I thought I would, but I think when we see cute little pumpkin custards, we expect them to taste like pumpkin pie.  I served the remaining 5 flans with dinner.  We put a little honey on them and they appealed to us a little more with some sweetness. My girls didn't care for them at all, my husband ate some, but my little 3 yr old guy was the only one that asked for more.  If you are worried about using the Gorgonzola cheese that Dorie calls for, the Gruyere was great with the flans.  My favorite bites were definitely the ones that were loaded with toasted walnuts and cheese.

The part about "moldy" cheese had me laughing so hard! I'm glad your little guy liked them to ask for more. Great photos and post!

I think your flans looked great. I also made them and left the cheese out altogether. These were not a hit in my home either. Definitely not one of my favorites.

They are pretty enough for Peacock's Princess Party, however, in this case, looks are deceiving! These flans are an interesting and pretty appetizer or vegetable dish, but, I agree, the brain wants them to taste sweet!

Yep this recipe sure was different. I don't think my peeps would have liked the original version. Im glad I tweaked mine!

These were a hit in my house, even with the "moldy" cheese. The girls said they didn't want them at first, but once they tasted them, they wanted their own.

So pretty! I bet the gruyere was delicious in these. I liked the salty bite of the gorgonzola, and also found I liked them best topped with honey.

They look beautiful. It seems like these do get mixed reviews. I'll be interested in what my family thinks when I make them next week.

They look incredible! I personally love Gorgonzola but if you don't, there really isnt' a good way around these. Even honey, which makes everything good, would have a hard time. Great post!

Your photo is great! And the family is so cute:)

We all loved the flans, moldy cheese and all (even though I was a bit disappointed, hoping there would be more for me).

But, I see how Gruyere would work:)

Gruyere is a great substitution! Sorry everyone didn't like them more.
